What To Expect Before, During, and After Breast Augmentation

With about 300,000 procedures every single year, breast augmentation has remained the number one plastic surgery procedure for years now.

It’s easy to see why. The technology used for surgical breast augmentation has never been more advanced, with amazing results and minimal downtime. It’s also surprisingly affordable and not just for movie stars anymore.

If you’re considering breast augmentation surgery, it’s important to understand the entire process so you can know what to expect.

Find Your Surgeon

The first thing you will want to do is ensure that you choose a surgeon that specializes in surgical breast augmentation and has a long list of happy clients. You deserve nothing less!

You will also have important discussions about your incision placement and size, as well as the type and size of the implants.

Before Your Operation

Once you’ve found your trusted surgeon, you will have a very simple pre-op to-do list to follow.

You will want to avoid any aspirin-containing medications wherever possible for about 3 weeks leading up to surgery. This may include:

  • Advil
  • Entrophen
  • ASA
  • 222s
  • Naprosyn
  • Vioxx
  • Other anti-inflammatories

You will also want to do a bit of prep work in the home. You will most likely not be able to reach upwards over your head for the first few days. So, ensure that everything you need will be stored low and within reach.

Also, you will want to pick up some new cotton sports bras that you can comfortably wear in the days following your procedures, as well as ensure you have a loose-fitting and comfortable top to wear immediately after your procedure. Avoid anything that needs to be pulled over your head. Go with something with a zipper or buttons.

On the night before the surgery, you will want to stop any food at midnight and any liquids 6 hours before your scheduled start.

The Actual Operation

The surgery itself can take between 1-1.5 hours.

Afterwards, a very light bandage will be applied over the incision site and you will wake up already wearing your sports bra.

You will be then taken to a recovery area, while a nurse will carefully monitor you and ensure you’re comfortable. From there, you will want someone to drive you home while you’re still feeling the effects of the anaesthetic.

After the Operation

It’s normal to see some swelling and bruising for 7-10 days after your surgery. You may also experience some pain that is easily treatable with medication that will be prescribed to you.

It is also strongly recommended to avoid any strenuous exercise, jogging, or yoga for about a month following your surgery.

Your surgeon will also show you the proper techniques for breast massaging following your surgery, which is very important in helping the implants settle into place.

This gives you a good idea of what to expect. However, if you have any more questions, be sure to ask your surgeon directly!
